Eastbourne International Folkdance Festival 2017

Esther Willems

Esther Willems Esther welcomes both experienced and less experienced dancers! She challenges the experienced dancers to dance the steps in the right style.

She will teach dances from all the regions in Bulgaria: Shopluk, Severniyashko, Pirin, East -Trace and West-Trace, Strandzha, Rodopi, and Dobrudzha.

She believes that it is important for dancers to move with a real feeling of the dance. Folklore dance material is very suitable to consciously deal with one's personal body movement possibilities, making dancing both a physical as well as an emotional experience.

She started international folk dancing at the age of 15 and in 1982 successfully finished the official Dutch folk dance teacher training programme. After participating as a dancer for many years in the Bulgarian Folk Dance Ensemble Praznik under the direction of Eddy Tijsen, she taught folk dance at primary and secondary schools and at the introduction programme of the Arnhem Dance Academy. In 1988 she established the Bulgarian Folk Dance Children Ensemble Zarowe in the city of Nijmegen.

For many yearsshe has taught international folk dance classes for children and adults with focus primarily on the dances from the Balkans, Armenia, and Israel. She also developed and presents special classes of Language and Movement for illiterate immigrants and gyrokinesis on world music through the Women in Movement Foundation in her home town Rotterdam.
